Goats and Goldens farm is located in Borden Indiana. We are a small hobby farm just within the city limits. Our focus is on Nigerian Dwarf goats and Golden Retriever dogs. We also have some other goats, a mule, and some chickens. We keep our goat herd only around a dozen so that it is a fun experience and not another JOB. This lets us enjoy the family experiece and have a few babies to watch.
Molly is our mule. We have been very pleased to learn about how protective Molly is with our goats. We let them all out - unfenced to free range during the day and Molly stays right with them. If any stray dogs find their way into her territory, Molly will chase them off. If one of the goats strays away from the others, Molly will run around them gathering them into a small group. One day, the door to the garage was left up. This is where we store the hay. The goats went inside to get to the hay and by doing so they left Molly's range of vision. Molly became very agitated that she could no longer see them and let out a very loud bray. Immediately, Barlow (the lead goat) ran from the garage up to Molly - said some calming goat words to her and once Molly was satisfied, Barlow was allowed to return to the garage. Molly immediately settled down and waited patiently outside while I went in to kick them all out. At night, in the pen, Molly will lay herself between the goats and any danger that might lurk in the dark.
A Mule is a cross between a donkey stallion (called a Jack) and a horse mare. Sometimes the male is called a John and the female is called a Jenny. The opposite of a mule is a Hinnie or Elum (mule spelled backwards)- when a horse stallion mates with a mare donkey. Both Johns and Mollies are sterile. Our Molly mule is a special Sicilian Mule. A Sicilian Mule is said to carry the " Donkey's Cross" - a light brown cross on her darker brown back. The cross is formed from a line that runs from the base of the mane and down the tail. Another line crosses at the shoulders forming a cross between the shoulder blades.

"The Donkey's Cross" "Bring me the colt of a donkey",was the masters request. A young donkey was brought to Jesus to carry Him into Jerusalem. A week later Jesus was ordered crucified. The little donkey loved the Lord and he wanted to help Him carry the corss. But alas, he was pushed away. The sad little donkey waited to say gooodbye until nearly all had left. As he turned to leave, the shadow of the cross fell upon his back and shoulders. And there it has remaied, a tribute to the loyalty and love of the humblest of God's creatures. |

Molly is trained to saddle ride, pull a cart and harness pull a load. She has been very helpful to us in moving trees around our property that had fallen during the 2004 tornado that hit Borden.

We are raising a small herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats. We originally bought a couple as an experiment. We fell in love with them. They make wonderful pets and they are very helpful in cleaning up yard debris. In my opinion, they make as good of a pet as a dog or cat. We enjoyed them enough to start a herd of our own. We have plans in the future to build a small cart and teach them to pull some small loads. Sometimes we take them on walks with us. They are great on a leash and off. Check out OUR GOATS page to learn more. We do NOT claim to be goat "experts" on our site. This site is a learn-as-you go for us. We are just having fun sharing what we have learned and creating a fun site. We only have enough goats that we can manage as a hobby and have fun with. We like to interact with each one and take lots of pictures. We also like to use the pictures to make art designs....check out our store. If you have any ideas or suggestions - feel free to contact me.
We have two Golden Retrievers named Forest (male) and Ranger (female). We have tried all sorts of dogs such as Rat Terriers, a Jack Russell, and a Blue Healer. Our son did an online test - what kind of dog is best for you - and came up with the Golden Retriever. We purchased Ranger at our Son's request and quickly decided that it's the best family dog we have ever had. She is very friendly and very eager to please. We decided to get a male and we purchased Forest a year later. Check out OUR GOLDEN RETRIEVERS page to learn more.

May 1st - We separated a young pregnant pygmy doe into a birthing pen. This was the pygmy's first birth. That night a storm came in with high winds and rain. Molly stood out in the rain getting drenched next to that pen all night long watching over mom while she gave birth. In the morning, Molly refused her feed in order to stand by and protect the new babe. After two days, Molly figured out a way to let the Mom and babe out of the pen so they could come out and be with her in the bigger pen. We've taken to calling her the Goat-Nanny!

| Design: Lap Lander with a licker license. I had a Jack Russell Terrier that was crazy about licking me in the face. My friend Larry said - "Hey, does she have a licker license?" Next thing you know, he added the lap lander because she's such a silly ole lap dog. We figured lots of other people probably have kissy dogs too, so we made this design -- My Dog is a Lap Lander with a Licker License!. This design is available for many dog breeds...check the drop list below. We are adding more designs as fast as we can so please keep checking back. | It turns out, this is Ranger's only litter. We decided to go ahead and neuter Forest. The breeding thing just didn't work out with us since Forest and Ranger are 'house dogs'. At least she got to have one litter and she was an awesome mother. |
Molly keeps a close eye on 'her babes'.
