| The Golden Retriever's General Appearance: Symmetrical, powerful, not clumsy nor long in the leg, displaying a kindly expression and possessing a personality that is eager, alert and self-confident. Primarily a hunting dog. We find our goldens to be excellent family pets getting along with children, and livestock. The Golden Retriever is a playful, fun loving dog that is full of energy. Everything is a game to them. When our property was hit by a tornado in 2004 and trees were pulled up by the roots, Ranger thought it was great fun to run and jump and hide in the tops of the trees that were lying on the ground. We had a Jack Russell terrier at the time and she had reacted to the tornado with horror, never quite recovering from the trauma. The Golden Retrievers are great car companions. We take a lot of road trips and these two lay in the back seat sleeping. They are so quiet, we sometimes forget they are there. Our Jack Russell, Lilly was always running around the car looking out the windows and jumping all over the place. Lilly would never settle down. Of course, don't forget that the Golden Retriever is actually bred to retrieve. They will play fetch all day long. They especially like to retrieve things from the water. It doesn't matter if it's summer or winter, they are always wanting to jump in for a swim. Our retrievers love the swimmig pool. Ranger takes a running jump over the 4 foot side and swims leisurely around in circles, then climbs out by way of the ladder. Sometimes she will just rest on the ladder and stay sittying in the water for awhile. Forest is a little more reserved. He likes the water too, but sometimes he needs a little coaxing. Size: Males 23-24 inches in height at withers; females 21 1/2- 22 1/2 inches. Lenght from breastbone to point of buttocks slightly greater than height at withers in ratio of 12:11. Weight for dogs 65-75 lbs, bithces 55-65 lbs The typical livespan of a Golden Retriever is 12-15 years. The Golden Retriever is a hunter, not a killer. We haven't had the chance to train ours for hunting yet, but it's on the list. So far, our Goldens are great mole hunters. They will will find one in seconds and pull it out of the ground. Then they don't know what to do with it. They will look at it, jump around it, nuzzel it, throw it up in the air, soak it with slobber, but never kill it. Our Jack Russell would see them fretting over a mole and she would run over and take it from them and kill it as if to say "Geez guys! That's what you're supposed to do!" I love to compare the differences between our Golden's and the Jack Russel because they are so different by instinct. I love both breeds and I especially love their differences. The Golden Retrievers are very gentle and gentle mouthed, where as the Jack Russells are definetly killers. We were at a lake and the Golden Retrievers dug up a little mole and my husband took it from them and threw it out into the water. They jumped in, swam to it, and brought it back gently, safely in their mouth. They are so gentle mouthed. Lilly (Jack Russell) snatched it and promptly put an end to that. |

| They are very curious and love to play with all sorts of things. Ranger was a big hit this day when she snuck in the water at a local koi pond. She was surprized as she nosed close to the surface and up popped a koi to meet her face to face. This print is available in my CafePress Store ~ just click on the picture to go there. |

| Design: Lap Lander with a licker license. I had a Jack Russell Terrier that was crazy about licking me in the face. My friend Larry said - "Hey, does she have a licker license?" Next thing you know, he added the lap lander because she's such a silly ole lap dog. We figured lots of other people probably have kissy dogs too, so we made this design -- My Dog is a Lap Lander with a Licker License!.
